8 Kurdish Families Returned to Their Villages in Afrin

Eight Kurdish families from the cities of Raqqa and Tabqa have returned to their original villages in Afrin, Syrian Kurdistan.

On April 8, 2025, five Kurdish families from Tabqa returned to the village of “Gemrûkê” in the Shera district, while three families from Raqqa returned to the village of Alkana in the Shiye town.

According to local sources, these families had left their villages around seven years ago and went to Shahba region and later moved to Raqqa and Tabqa.

Since the fall of the Assad regime, tens of thousands of displaced Kurdish families have returned to their home villages. According to the latest statistics from the Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Afrin, more than 20,000 families have returned.

The return movement is ongoing, while at the same time Arabs families are leaving Afrin and its surrounding areas and go back to their original provinces.

Mohammad Ismail, head of the Kurdish National Council in Syria and secretary of the Kurdistan Democratic Party - Syria, told Welat TV that "we have a project to return the people of Afrin to their villages, we have always called for their return and encouraged and supported people to return, since the beginning there has been a return, but after the fall of the Assad regime it has significantly increased, and we call on all citizens to return to their lands and homeland."
