Damascus, Tokyo Discuss Stronger Cooperation, Investment, and Syria’s Reconstruction

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani met with Keiichi Iwamoto, Japan’s assistant foreign minister and director-general of the Middle East and Africa Bureau, to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations, as well as cooperation on reconstruction and investment in Syria.

The meeting, held in Damascus on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026, took place as part of consultations between the two sides on issues of mutual interest.

The officials reviewed prospects for expanding Syrian-Japanese relations and enhancing cooperation across a range of sectors. The talks also addressed reconstruction and investment efforts in light of the challenges facing Syria during the current phase.

Both sides reaffirmed their support for Syria’s unity and stability as key pillars for promoting security and development. Syria’s new government is seeking to broaden cooperation with regional and international partners to support reconstruction efforts and revive the country's economy after years of the Syrian uprising and the widespread destruction that affected cities, towns, infrastructure, and service and productive sectors across the country.

Damascus has made the rehabilitation of vital infrastructure, the attraction of investment, and the improvement of essential public services among its top priorities in an effort to create the conditions for economic recovery and rebuilding the damage caused by years of war.
