Samir Oso: Return of Sari Kaniye Residents Continues After Necessary Measures Are Taken

Samir Oso, Deputy to the Syrian Minister of Defense for the Eastern Region, condemned the attacks on several families returning to Sari Kaniye, confirming that the Syrian government will pursue those responsible and take legal action against them.

In a media statement on Monday, 10 August 2026, Oso said, "We condemn and denounce the attacks carried out by a number of attackers against families returning to Sari Kaniye and their attempts to prevent residents from returning to their city."

He added that "the state and the relevant authorities will pursue those involved and take the necessary legal action against them," urging the residents to "remain calm and patient" and confirming that "no one can prevent the residents of the region from returning to their cities and villages, and their right to return to their homeland is protected."

Oso added that the return of Sari Kaniye residents will resume once the necessary security measures are in place, adequate protection is provided, and their safety is ensured throughout the return process.

The first convoy of displaced people from Sari Kaniye departed from Hasaka towards the city on Monday, after nearly seven years in displacement, as part of the implementation of the January 29 agreement between the Syrian government and the "SDF."

The convoy included 410 families, although it was expected to include more than 600 families. However, some families were not prepared, so they postponed their return until later convoys.

Following the arrival of the first convoy in the city, local sources reported that a number of returning families had been attacked, while videos circulated on social media showing people being attacked and having their property and vehicles damaged.

For its part, the Sari Kaniye Displaced Persons Committee said in a statement that it is monitoring developments in the city, holding the relevant authorities in Damascus—including the Presidential Team, security agencies, and the Sari Kaniye regional administration—responsible for maintaining security, protecting the returnees, and pursuing and arresting the attackers.
