Colombia Earthquake Death Toll Rises to 132, With Hundreds Injured

The death toll from the earthquake that struck Colombia has risen to 132, with more than 570 people injured, as rescue workers and volunteers continue searching through the rubble for survivors amid widespread destruction affecting dozens of buildings.

The Association of Colombian Capital Cities (Asocapitales) said on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, that the death toll had risen to 132, while the number of injured had surpassed 570.

The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the impoverished Chocó department on the Pacific coast early Monday, causing panic in several cities in western Colombia and prompting thousands of residents to flee their homes.

President Abelardo de la Esperanza declared a state of emergency and pledged to lead a coordinated rescue operation.

Reports indicated that 188 people were missing in the city of Cali alone, according to France 24.

According to Asocapitales, 86 buildings collapsed, while operations at seven airports were suspended due to earthquake-related damage. The Colombian Geological Service recorded 47 aftershocks by Monday afternoon, as search-and-rescue operations continued in the affected areas.
