Erdogan: We Will Not Allow Entities in Northern Syria That Threaten Turkey’s Security

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that “Turkey will not allow the presence of any organizations or entities in northern Syria or any other part of the country that could threaten Turkey’s security,” while reaffirming Ankara’s “commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity, political unity, and sovereignty.”

Erdogan made the remarks in an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, describing the process of change in Syria as a “historic turning point” and saying that the new phase should pave the way for lasting peace, stability, and the reconstruction of the country.

He explained that war, terrorism, and instability in Syria had harmed the entire region, noting that since December 2024, the country had made significant progress in improving security conditions, laying the groundwork for economic development, and strengthening social cohesion.

Erdogan praised the regional role and support for the Syrian government, as well as its success in developing relations with countries in the region and the international community, avoiding involvement in additional conflicts, and focusing on sustainable stability and security.

He stressed that the normalization of conditions in Syria had become a strategic issue for the region, noting that the country had begun to become linked to connectivity and development projects rather than instability.

Erdogan emphasized that Turkey would continue supporting Syria’s stability, helping the country recover, and promoting regional peace in cooperation with its regional and international partners. He called for the new phase to be shaped in a spirit of peace, brotherhood, and sovereignty, based on a vision of a shared future.
