UN: 1.72 Million Syrians Have Returned to Syria

The latest data released by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in August showed that around 1.72 million Syrians have returned to the country, amid a range of challenges facing their return.

According to UNHCR’s updated figures for August, 1,717,964 Syrians have returned. The agency noted that the figure includes people whose return it has verified or monitored and therefore does not necessarily represent the total actual number of returnees.

The largest concentrations of returnees are in Damascus, Idlib, Aleppo, Rural Damascus, Homs, Hama, and Daraa, which together have received the overwhelming majority of those monitored by UNHCR.

The agency stressed that returning does not end families’ needs, noting that many returnees continue to face challenges related to securing housing, restoring livelihoods, accessing basic services, resolving documentation and legal issues, and reintegrating into their communities.

UNHCR said its support for returnees focuses on reintegration, helping families move from the stage of return toward self-reliance and rebuilding stable lives.

Alongside returns from abroad, UNHCR data indicate that around 1.97 million internally displaced Syrians have also returned to their areas of origin. The agency noted that more than 5.5 million people remained internally displaced, according to data from August 2025.
